After a viewing of the Ken Burns documentary ‘The Roosevelts’, I was astounded by the larger-than-life persona of Teddy Roosevelt (26th President of the United States). The mythic stories that encapsulated his life begged for a narrative of TR in the afterlife—I imagined in death, he simply shifted planes to carry on his epic adventures throughout the rest of time.
My process begins with a hand-rendered pencil drawing, which is then scanned and colored in Photoshop. The quality and texture that can be achieved with pencil is distinctive and inimitable; so I use blending modes to preserve those details—which shows through in the completed digital artwork.
As a vehicle for the delivery of portraits and other illustrated concepts, I imagined a plane occupied by characters that exist in the recesses of the subconscious mind; wedged somewhere between reality and my own childhood nostalgia. A place called Lucid ÆTHER (you can practically smell a Twilight Zone aroma in here).
